About Futurex Key Modifiers

Futurex HSMs use modifiers to derive variant keys from a Master File Key (MFK). The modifier is XORed with the first byte of each 8-byte block of the MFK (shifted left by 3 bits).

Common Modifier Usage:

  • 00 - Key Encrypting Key (KEK), Terminal Master Key (TMK)
  • 01 - Zone PIN Key (ZPK), Terminal PIN Key (TPK) with key separation
  • 03 - Card Verification Key (CVK), MAC Key
  • 04 - ZPK/TPK without key separation
  • 08 - Base Derivation Key (BDK), SMC/SMI keys
  • 09 - Application Cryptogram (AC), PIN Generation Key
